Vacation

Hi everyone. I'm looking into making this year's summer vacation a trip to the great state of Tennessee. I'd like to rent a cabin somewhere (pet friendly) and spend the week running and maybe biking. Where would you recommend for this type of experience? It would also be nice to be close enough to attractions and restaurants to do those things too. I'm not going for the total isolation thing, but the main focus would be running, sunning, and relaxation with the occasional sightseeing.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Forum: General Forum

May & June Track Meets

On Saturday May 5th, and Saturday May 12th, Tennessee Running will be organizing two high-performance Twilight Track Meets at Vanderbilt University.

The May 5th meet will feature a U.S. record attempt in the women's 3000m steeplechase. The field will be lead by current AR holder Ann Gaffigan and will include several other women who have clocked sub-10 over 3000mS/C.

More information here:

http://www.tnrunning.com/twilight/tentative_schedule.html

***********

On Saturday, June 2nd, the Music City Distance Carnival will take place at the same venue. This event is for distance runners only, and will have a total prize purse of around $8,000-10,000.

Events offered: 800m (open & invitational sections), 1 mile (open & invitational sections + invitational over-40 and over-50 races), 3000m Steeplechase (invitational only), 5000m (open & invitational)

The Distance Carnival, due to a looser schedule, can accommodate runners of a much wider range of ability and there will be 800m and 1 mile heats for just about anyone that wants to run. I am also considering adding some 600m races for kids.

This event has yielded some very impressive performances in the past few years, including the fastest women's steeplechase ever in the state of Tennessee, and, thanks to Anthony Famiglietti's awesome sub-4 run in 2005, the second fastest ever men's mile (second only to Marty Liquori's 3:57.7 clocking in '69), and not forgetting the fastest ever HS boys' 1 mile clocking in the state by Andrew Bumbalough in 2005.

If you don't run, come watch. It'll be the best $5 you spend!

Held in conjunction with this event will be a dinner/Q+A/seminar with notable speakers including local Olympian Margaret Sloan (nee Groos), legendary Kenyan runner Henry Rono (who will also run in the over-50s 1 mile). This will probably be held at the Holiday Inn Select on West End Ave. More details TBA.

Forum: General Forum

Texas Independence Relay

This race is the brainchild of a good friend of mine. It looks cool... a great alternative to Hood-to-Coast.

Here's a brief description:

The Texas Independence Relay is composed of 40 relay legs of various lengths, totaling 200 miles. The course starts in Gonzales, TX, where the Texas Revolution began, and it finishes at the San Jacinto Monument, where Texas Independence was won! To tackle this formidable task, your team will be composed of 8 to 12 members (your choice!), and you'll have an exceptional time either furthering good friendships or making new ones! You'll encourage each other along the way while you visit the small towns of Shiner, Moulton, Flatonia, Schulenburg, Weimar, Columbus, Altair, Eagle Lake, Wallis, Orchard, Simonton, and Fulshear. Then, you'll make your way through the paramount city of Houston, experiencing it in a way you never have before! Racing on a team with your friends in this unique format over an incomparable span of Texas steeped with momentous history all amounts to a GREAT time that youll fondly remember for years to come! This all takes place over Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2, 2008. Come and take it if you have what it takes!

http://www.texasindependencerelay.com/

Forum: General Forum
