Reply with quote | #1 | So, who's headed to Foot Locker this weekend from Tennessee? Predictions for Nationals qualifiers? I'll go out on a limb and predict that Kathy will qualify. Sean Keveren also has a good shot. Who else from around the state? |

Reply with quote | #2 | Now, Jeff, predicting Kathy to qualify hardly constitutes going out on a limb!
I'll stick my neck out just a little further:
I predict KK clocks 16:40 and wins Regional by around 15 seconds.
Sean Keveren will be on that same plane to San Diego on December 7th. |

Reply with quote | #3 | I think she'll win, too, but I'd say closer to 16:30. I'm excited to see what Sean can do in a fast field. Go get 'em Sean! |

Reply with quote | #4 | yeah, Seana! I'll go for Kroeger hitting 16:34.47 and getting tripped at the 800 m mark. Sean will spike at least 4 guys, and run....15:23.34 |

Reply with quote | #5 | Let's hope Keveren runs faster than 15:23, which might get him top-20. I'm crossing my fingers for 15:00, which should just get him (and Dave) on the plane to SD. __________________ ORHS XC Coach |

Reply with quote | #6 | I think both Sean and I would be pretty disappointed if he 'only' ran 15:23. A recent 11:52 4000m time trial on the track would suggests that a 15:00 clocking is quite possible at McAlpine. Such a clocking, or something within 5-10 seconds, should punch his ticket to San Diego. If it doesn't, and he gave it 100%, then that's okay; he's just a junior.
But this is the race we've been working towards all year, and besides a mini-taper for the Memphis Twilight Meet, this is the first race he has really backed off for all year. He'll give it everything he's got, and if he's firing on all cylinders, he sould be on the plane to the left coast with KK.
Guys to watch (place, time at last year's meet) are:
BenHubers (4th, 14:55), Girma Mecdehso (beat Hubers at GA State Meet), and Jay Heller (13th, 15:19) from GA; Billy Matthews from AL; Duncan Phillips (5th, 14:59) and Colby Lowe (9th, 15:07) from TX; Ryan Hill (15th, 15:24) from NC; Griff Graves (14:55 on McAlpine this year) from VA; Kevin Schwab (20th, 15:28) from OK
Good luck to everyone from TN who is heading to Charlotte. Go easy on the turkey stuffing and pumpkin pie. Hydrate well. Travel safely. And give 'em hell Saturday morning. Let's swing the spotlight firmly on the Tennessee high school running scene. |

Reply with quote | #12 | On the road headed to Asheville,NC. Sean was about 21st. Not the result we were looking for. The race was unbelievably fast early on. Sean hit 1M in 4:40 and wasn't even in the top 20! Discouraaged, he lost focus between 1 and 1.5M. He got his act together by 2M but by then the top 10 kids were away and clear. I think he clocked 15:25. |

Reply with quote | #15 | Copied 'n' pasted from a post I made on Dyestat this morning:
Tennessee's girls ran great. Obviously, KK was a shoe-in for a FLN berth, but Rita & Virginia making the trip too is awesome. This trio did us proud.
Regarding the boys' race, the only thing more sick than the stench at the starting line was the opening pace. Keveren clocked 4:38/4:39 for the first mile and was in 21st place!! In the 2005 race such an opening split would have placed him about 4th, right at the front of the pack chasing Michael Eaton, whose opening pace seemed suicidal. Fast forward a year and you've got a dozen kids 'pulling an Eaton'! He told me after the race, "I was going as hard as I could, but I was in about 30th, and being passed!".
Sean panicked a little when, shortly after the mile marker, he wasn't moving up and people weren't coming back to him. He lost the faith - faith in his strength and his training - and he stopped racing for about 1000m and just went through the motions. At around 21/4 miles, he got his act together again and started racing, but it was too late.
It was not the result* we were looking for. I blame myself for not putting him in a position where he had an actual race on his hands all season long. In hindsight, I should have entered him in the ROC at Great American. But I honestly thought our team was going to perform well.
We ran a workout on Monday were we ran 3 x 1200m with the first 400 very fast, before settling into race pace. This was good race simulation, theoretically, but it didn't prepare Sean for him having 20-odd kids in front of him. As he said to me when we cooled down, "I've never finished lower than 8th in any cross-country race. I was so far back, and I freaked out and doubted myself."
Last year, his teammate, Tom Divinnie ran an even paced race (4:55-ish) and moved up from 35th to 22nd to 12th at the mile markers. The difference was Tom was a year older, wiser, and more confident that those who had gone out so hard would come back to him. The other difference was Tom was only shooting for top 25 going into the race.
Sean and I both learned a valuable lesson Saturday. This year, he will go to San Diego as a spectator with his father. Next year, with some hard lessons learned and Sean hungry to amp up his training, he will, I'm sure, be on the plane with Kathy, Virginia, and a couple of other Tennesseans.
Also: Allen Etheridge's run was remarkable. Even if I had been in the shape of my life he wold have 'Zidaned' me with ease. I hope he runs Rocket City in two weeks, because I think a low 2:30s clocking is in the cards.
* FYI. Not that it matters all that much to Sean, but he actually finished 18th, not 20th. We've watched the video and he was passed by two boys in the chute. |
